Individual apartments are also equipped with smoke detectors. These detectors are not connected to the central alarm system, so if they are activated the fire department is not automatically notified. Chesapeake Commons recommends that residents purchase fire extinguishers for your home in case an accident such as a grease fire occurs. Please also follow best practices when burning candles and attend to all manufacturer safety guidelines with small appliances such as space heaters and toaster ovens.

We also recommend that you familiarize yourselves with the most efficient escape route from your apartment home. In the event of a fire, proceed to the closest stairwell. There are two stairwells which are located at either end of the hallways. Do not use the elevators. You may want to practice this escape route with your families. Also consider keeping an emergency kit in an easily accessible location. This kit should include first aid supplies and a flashlight with fresh batteries.
